Album

The Charm of the Highway Strip is the third studio album by American indie pop band The Magnetic Fields, released in 1994. It is the first Magnetic Fields album to have its original release with record label Merge. Its title, lyrics and musical styling are a nod to country music, though the songs of Stephin Merritt remain rooted in classic pop and synthesizers. Virtually every song deals with roads and travel, and several songs' lyrics implicitly reference vampires. The Magnetic Fields New York, New York. The third Magnetic Fields album, and the first on which mastermind Stephin Merritt sings. He brings his trademark sardonicism and irony to bear on the tired themes of country music all the songs deal with roads, trains, or travel of other sorts and subsequently enlivens them. All the while, he stays true to his native synthpop. The title comes from a quote by J. Jackson, a writer most well-known, fittingly enough, for his cultural interpretations of the American landscape : Let us hope that the merits and charm of the highway strip are not so obscure that they will be accepted by the wid. Stephin Merritt took more of a narrative approach than usual on The Charm of the Highway Strip, which was in part inspired as the title indicates by on-the-road experiences and exhibited a very slight country influence. Stephin Merritt's songwriting is in peak form here and when Merritt's in peak form you ought to be listening and as strange as this might be to say about a synth-pop country road album with a bit of a vampire fascination, he plays it fairly straight - Charm of the Highway Strip is possessed of a thematic unity and. The light-hearted, psychedelic chamber-pop of the Fields first few records beguiles, almost going out of it's way to underplay The Highway Strips somber themes. Thankfully Merritt will not be suppressed, and the music just compliments his drunkards croon. It also doesnt hurt that this record, which is obsessed with the American sprawl, happens to be one of the best at translating that feeling of desolate hope one can experience as the yellow lines begin to blur. But to equate this to a certain time and space is nearly pointless - the US motorways serve as a plot point, but The Charm O.
