The night that Mitch Ryder took the stage in Essen Grugahalle almost nobody in Germany (and Europe) knew him but a few music enthusiasts. And the guy from Detroit, USA took the chance – totally drunk! He fooled Alan Bangs with lack of interest, flirted with Alan's girl friend and played the big rock star.
So at 2:00 AM he stepped in front of a sold out concert hall and an audience all over Europe. His voice wasn't best this evening. But you can call me Fred if it wasn't what's it all about: pure ROCK'N'ROLL!
His band played was excellent, the sound typically northern Soul in Detroit style and the audience didn't get a word or two.
His record company and his management wanted to dispatch him but within three days teh sales went up. It was the beginning of a life long love.
13 years later Mitch asked the East German band Engerling if they wanted to be his band in Europe. Every year in the long cold months Mitch comes to Europe to go on tour with this German band.
The second DVD gives evidence. Engerling and Mitch Ryder is like a pair of shoes.
But which one is the better concert? To me it's the 1979 classic Rockpalast night. Although his voice isn't best this night, although Mitch showes all his arrogance on stage his band is too tough to ingnore. The power, the attitude – phantastic! The 2004 concert in Metternich / Eifel – right in the middle of nowhere – is solid and good. But Engerling doesn't have the power as his old band from '79. Mitch's voice is better than 25 years ago but even Mr Ryder's lost power.
If I could mix his old band with his voice of today and the attitude of the Essen concert – well it could be perfect.
This Rockpalast DVD is a historic recording and worth every dime. But compared to others I can't give a higher rating.
Mitch Ryder and the German audience both made peace with each other. Mr. Levise knows he will never be the big rock star he wanted to be but he realized that the European audience is open for his knew songs and accept him as a living artist. It's a life long love from both sides of the club.
