James Houston Davis September 11, 1899 November 5, 2000 was an American politician, notable segregationist and a singer and songwriter of both sacred and popular songs. Davis was elected for two nonconsecutive terms from 1944 to 1948 and from 1960 to 1964 as the governor of his native Louisiana. He ran both campaigns as a controversial advocate for impoverished and rural white Louisianians. Singer and songwriter, born 11 September 1899 near Beech Springs, Louisiana, died 5 November 2000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Known as The Singing Governor, for he was a successful country & western and gospel singer as well as a politician, serving two terms as Louisiana governor 1944-1948 and 1960-1964.
