Since David Bowie spent the '90s jumping from style to style, it comes as a shock that Hours, his final album of the decade, is a relatively straightforward affair. Not only that, but it feels unlike anything else in his catalog. Bowie's music has always been a product of artifice, intelligence, and synthesis. Hours is a relaxed, natural departure from this method. Arriving after two labored albums, the shift in tone is quite refreshing. Thursday's Child, the album's engaging mid-tempo opener, is a good indication of what lays ahead. Released: October 1999 Label: Virgin Producers: David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels. David talked about Omikrons music in the E3: I moved right away from the stereotypical industrial game-music sound. My priority in writing music for Omikron was to give it an emotional subtext. Meanwhile, Bowie started to write and compose the music for his next album. He had some great experiences experimenting with Outside and Earthling, so he decided to continue experimenting with sound and lyrics. In 1999, Bowie gave an interview to the Rolling Stone to explain some things about the Hours album. Things like the name of the album: Oh, its a feeble pun. At this point, David Bowie has done more harm than good to his fans' cochleas. His last few albums have failed in almost every aspect, but not for a lack of trying. Outside, his 1995 comeback, was a concept album about a futuristic murder case that featured an endless stream of clichés and banal S&M imagery in lieu of lyrics. For the better part of an hour, Bowie drifts through some the most sterile and unimaginative songs since Sting released Mercury Falling. On Thursday's Child, Bowie acknowledges his issues with growing old, and possibly, his dwindling fanbase. Throw me tomorrow, he sings. Not that I've really got a chance. At least he can admit it
