Notes

Released as a Record Store Day 4/22/2017 exclusive.
It includes five exclusive Bowie prints.
Limited edition of 15000 copies worldwide.

In August 1971, David Bowie's manager, Tony Defries had 500 promo LPs pressed to secure Bowie and fellow Mainman artist Dana Gillespie a record deal. The promo album, featuring seven Bowie performances on one side and five by Gillespie on the flip is often referred to as the BOWPROMO white label album due to BOWPROMO being most of the matrix found in the runout space on the LP.

This release is a copy of the first side of that 1971 promo LP David Bowie / Dana Gillespie. From all published accounts it is a 'needle drop' copy of the 1971 LP and not taken from the original tapes.

Both Category appear in label rim.

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced Space Oddity or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray have said, a listener strictly accustomed to David Bowie in his assorted '70s guises would probably. 2020 ChangesNowBowie Version. 2020 сингл Dillinja Mix. You like David Bowie His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Hunky Dory came out in '71, I think he really came into the mainstream, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Freddie Mercury and Alice Cooper, but I think Bowie had a far more flamboyant, androgynous sense of style. In '72, Bowie released this, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spider From Mars, his most critically acclaimed album. I think his u. Bowpromo contains alternate mixes of seven songs recorded during the sessions for Hunky Dory , five of which wound up on the album. It was a split EP, with the second half containing five tracks by Dana Gillespie, who was also signed to the Gem Group, a company formed by Bowie's manager Tony Defries. He pressed only 500 copies and distributed them to labels in the hopes of securing a deal for one of them. Side 6 David Bowie logo etching. David Bowie, 'Bowpromo' Track Listing. A few comments, the quality of the pressing is seriously good! Second, the exterior packaging really lets this release down. I would have expected much more, especially for the money. I appreciate they went for a minimalist look but it does nothing for me.

Just read this on Superdeluxeedition.com"On a side note, any chance that you can get in touch with the people at Parlophone that sent you the promo copy of BOWPROMO and ask them whether they intend to make a statement on the faults regarding the release? It runs slow adding several seconds to each track. The channels are reversed. The liner notes are incorrect and it’s been edited to trim the silence between two tracks. The last point is so trivial it seems pointless but given the fact that it’s a needledrop issued as a replica purely for hardcore fans, why would they do that?If the new Sgt Pepper was released running slow with the channels reversed there would be uproar. When did it become okay to not give a toss about the quality of Bowie releases?"

I just listened to my copy of BOWPROMO and it sounds great which was my main concern. I was leery about them cramming 24 minutes of music on one side, but I guess because it's not a rocking LP they were able to get away with it. It's cool to have this on wax. I only paid about $35 Canadian for it so I'm not sweating the price too much. Do I think they should have put the Dana Gillespie songs on side two? Yes, I would have preferred that. Maybe they didn't have the source tapes for DG songs? I don't know what source was used to create this release, but I'm pretty happy to have it. It's a cool addition to my Bowie collection and I love the different vocals and mixes for these amazing songs.

Agreed. I've just gotten around to opening mine ($59.99) & I was under the impression there were 5000. Steep price, but sounds great!

I'd have been delighted with it for $35 Canadian (around £20 UK). The list selling price here on RSD though was £54.99. How would you have felt about this set for $90? I don't know what they were thinking. Agree though, it does sound superb.

Pretty fun if you are a Bowie fan. I enjoy the music and picking through the photos and the envelopes and the tissue paper... a recreation of a rare find. It works for me. These are the kind of releases that are right in my wheel house. Right next to my kitchy Doors London Fog release. Maybe it is an Epiphone instead of Gibson, I will take it. The version of Quicksand stands out.

looks like boolshit .

Bought it for approx. 45dollars..(I guess some people had to pay way more) and even that price seems to be very high. It's not very limited to be collectors item. I'm not regretting buying it too much since I like the package...I picked it up very spontaneusly. lol

The ultimate Parlophone rip off. They are taking us for mugs. Extorting every penny they can from Bowie fans when they should be protecting his catalogue rather than swamping the market with very poor releases such as this. Of course the original of this was a fascinating item and yes, we all would have liked it but to make this out to be a big deal boxed set priced at over £50 in most stores when it's in a generic, poor quality white box with a sticker with a few photos printed on average stock in a pointless envelope and a bit of tissue paper is shocking. The mastering and plates cost is reduced as it's one sided, (don't even get me started on why they didn't secure the rights to the Dana Gillespie B side and do this thing properly), and the sleeve is a single colour print. Very low price to produce, quite probably less than the Cracked Actor triple set (Now there's a fabulous release). There's no digital download included (nor with Cracked Actor). This item is a disgrace and Parlophone should be ashamed. This set being Limited to 15,000 is a joke!! Laughing all the way to the bank. They're taking the piss.

DameFerlando The Dana Gillespie version of "Andy Warhol" is rather crucial to this release. The Spiders played on it, and Bowie produced it! WTF... Anyway, these versions are essentially the same as the Hunky Dory album. From 'wot' I've read it's her copy that some are raving about. It is apparently different 'enough' for the completists inside every Bowie Fan...they hope. There's reams been written about the differences but no they don't sound drastically changed....much.I've only got rips to compare but the version of Andy Warhol on her original album seems to have way more err 'DOOF' or depth to it.There's a Complete Mainman Sessions CD of hers with it on but it sounds a bit thin.It has both the promo and album versions and is the only official source that I could see ?
Hiylchis
you're being too kind. along with all the cosmetic shortcomings, the mastering is a fail - channels are flipped and it runs too slow. in addition the liner notes are inaccurate. there's very little right about this release, and it should never have been issued in this form. this is CD bonus material only given that the masters are lost. a needledrop of half an album pressed to vinyl and sold at this price? bootleggers have more pride.

Limited edition of 15000? That's a really tiny quantity isn't it....

Record Store Day promo pressing. They are always like that. This one got 5000 records per continent, I believe.
Qiahmagha
they did forget the b-side! where is Dana Gillespie ?
Zyangup
I read that it was ripped from her own copy.
Saithi
It is a Bowie only release No Dana Gillespie
Shakataxe
interesting that the b-side is not even referred to in the booklet. quite a nice item though.
Hasirri
They did say previously it was only the Bowie tracks that were going to be put on this. The bootlegs sound good if you want the Gillespie tracks and I think there's a FLAC version still floating around.
