The gig ended with Joe Walshs All Night Long, which you can hear right here. It was the last time that they played together until the start of the Hell Freezes Over tour 14 years later. The Long Beach concert was the culmination of a long world tour in support of The Long Run, an album that took 18 agonizing months to complete. The band was fried by this point and tensions were running very high. Making matters worse, guitarist Don Felder objected to the bands plan to use the Long Beach show as a fundraising event for California senator Alan Cranston. But, before Chicago, I had yet to perform a last important duty for 2016. In September, I was approached to sing at the Nobel Prize ceremony, honoring the laureate for literature, who was then unknown. It would be a few days in Stockholm, in a beautiful hotel, overlooking the water-an honorable opportunity to shine, contemplate, and write. I chose one of my songs that I deemed appropriate to perform with the orchestra. In the hotel lobby, there was a lovely Japanese woman in formal traditional dress-an embroidered cream-colored floor-length kimono and sandals. Her hair was perfectly coiffed. Larry David, who created and stars in Curb Your Enthusiasm, on which Bob Einstein often recurred, offers his condolences on his friend's death. It was an amazing, unforgettable experience knowing and working with him. There was no one like him, as he told us again and again. Were all in a state of shock. And play the role he did. Driven by that unmistakable just-gargled-gravel voice, Einstein stole nearly every Curb scene he was in. Everyone has their favorite Funkhouser moment: The time he busted Larry stealing flowers from Grandma Funkhousers highway memorial. By the time of the Apollo 11 mission, TV was heavily invested in the space programme. It had also got its act together in terms of production, notes the Briscoe Center's Ben Wright. By then the studios had honed their skills, Mr Wright says. Another part of the appeal, says John Craft, a professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, was the landing occurring in the wake of the Russians putting the Sputnik satellite into space. Americans had seen how there was a challenge out there to our personal leadership in the world, Mr Craft says. So to put a man on the moon felt like we were back in business.
